APIDA Resource Center

ASIAN PACIFIC ISLANDER DESI AMERICAN

As Assistant Coordinator for Cypress College’s APIDA (Asian Pacific Islander Desi American) Student Resource Center, I directed marketing efforts for the newly opened affinity space for students. I also took on administrative work, event planning, and social media management.

THE IMPACT

  • Social Media

I directed social media for the center, increasing engagement by 83% and reaching over 16,000 accounts in just three months. I didn’t just optimize the center’s digital presence—I built it from the ground up. I created the youtube channel, Instagram posts, canva accounts, gmail, linktree, public calendar for events, and a LinkedIn page. I also designed promotional materials, led marketing initiatives, managed daily programming, tracked budgets, and handled data reporting.

  • Programming and Student Engagement

I collaborated closely with the APIDA Center's lead coordinator to design and implement a wide range of daily programming aimed at fostering student engagement and community building. Our events included professional development workshops with guest speakers, self-defense and cultural dance classes, hands-on crafts, karaoke nights, and finals study sessions. By maintaining a consistent and welcoming schedule of activities, we significantly increased student participation and awareness of the center’s resources.

  • APIDA Waves Podcast

To celebrate Filipino American History Month, our team launched APIDA Waves, a podcast series highlighting voices within the APIDA community. Over the course of the month, we interviewed eight guest speakers alongside our lead coordinator, Joey Quenga, discussing their professional journeys, the influence of their cultural identity on their careers, and personal advice for students navigating their own paths. This initiative served as both a cultural celebration and a tool for professional inspiration within our student community.

MAKING WAVES

One of my main tasks at the APIDA center was to plan and execute a ribbon cutting event for the opening of the center. I coordinated all aspects of the event with the help of the fantastic team behind the APIDA Center.

  • I coordinated all aspects of the event including talent booking, food vendors, party rentals, and decor, while hosting distinguished guests such as the Deputy Chancellor of the California Community Colleges and Cypress city council members.

  • The event lasted a total of two hours, hosting over 200 attendees from the school and the community. It was a truly immersive experience, serving food from various Asian cultures and showcasing 6 cultural performances:

Blessing and Land Acknowledgement - Joey Quenga and Kutturan Chamoru Foundation

    Lion Dance - Dragon Phoenix

Fire Knife Dance - Chief Leiataua

    Polynesian Dance - Nonosina

CHamoru Dance - Kutturan Chamoru Foundation Dance Group

Bollywood Performance - Cypress College Dance Department

  • The event was quite the spectacle, with over 200 attendees, hosting distinguished guests such as the Deputy Chancellor of the California Community Colleges and Cypress city council members.

This celebration’s success raised awareness of the center’s efforts and gained support from the Cypress community.
